What Is Yoga?

What is yoga? The original Sanskrit definition of yoga means to join together. Usually in that context the joining together referred to joining the consciousness of the practitioner with the consciousness of a God, Goddess, or guru. Today, for most people, when they think of yoga they think of Hatha Yoga which is the use of physical poses to improve flexibility and strength. Depending on how it is taught, it can also mean to improve your consciousness through focus and awareness of the breath. Although in many yoga classes the breath is not the focus, in Yoga Therapy training a large portion of the training is on the use of the breath to improve physical and mental conditions.

Because of Donna's background in psychotherapy she includes the focus on the breath in her yoga classes. She focuses on proper alignment of the poses and allowing her students to work at their own pace. The poses are used to get into the body instead of using the body to get into the pose. Although having proper alignment is important, honoring your body where it is and working there allows your body to increase its range of motion at its own pace. Working in that space allows your body to release the toxins, emotions, and increase flexibility and strength in a healthy and safe way.

Donna calls her style of yoga The Middle Way. She doesnít teach hard core power yoga or easy sit on the mat and breathe yoga. It is a Middle Way, where there is vigorous movement with a focus on breath and alignment.

Donna has finished completed her 200 hours of training needed to be a Registered Yoga Teacher. Donna has been teaching yoga in Houston, TX for 5 years both at the gym and private classes as arranged.
